Digital Twin International Research Center

International Institute for Interdisciplinary and Frontiers, Beihang University of China

The Digital Twin International Research Center (DTIRC) is one of the global leading organizations in digital twin research. The DTIRC has spearheaded significant research in digital twin theory and industrial applications, yielding innovative outcomes. Pioneering concepts like digital twin shopfloor and engines, the DTIRC has proposed digital twin networks and led a consortium of over ten universities in organizing the Digital Twin International Conference. Additionally, the DTIRC published the first Nature digital twin journal article, marking a milestone in advancing this transformative technology. The DTIRC runs two prestigious academic journals, further solidifying its role as a cornerstone in driving cutting-edge research and applications in the evolving field of digital twins.

Leading domestic and international scholars, the Center has pioneered the establishment of theoretical frameworks, technologies, tools, and standards for digital twin systems. It proposed concepts such as "digital twin workshop" and "digital twin equipment," with research outcomes tracked by over 100 universities and adopted by more than 100 enterprises worldwide. The Center has published over 20 ESI highly cited papers in Nature and its sub-journals, along with four monographs on digital twin design, manufacturing services, and workshop practices. Its work was awarded the First Prize of Natural Science by the Ministry of Education in 2022.

Aligned with global academic frontiers and national priorities, the Center has undertaken a series of national-level research projects, including over 20 initiatives such as the National Key R&D Program, NSFC Key International Cooperation Projects, National High-Quality Development Special Projects, and Beijing Municipal Major Special Projects. The developed systems and devices have been applied in more than a dozen enterprises and groups, including the First Academy of CASIC, the Fifth Academy of CASIC, AVIC, and China North Industries Group, as well as industries such as high-speed rail, textile machinery, gas pipelines, satellites, ships, and nuclear power, facilitating digital transformation and intelligent upgrading. Notable awards include the First Prize of China Machinery Industry Science and Technology Invention in 2022 and the First Prize of the National Smart Manufacturing Innovation Competition in 2021.

The Center has established an international collaboration platform known as "two journals and one conference" to lead global digital twin research and applications. It launched the international journals Digital Twin (selected as a high-start new journal in China's 2022 Excellence Plan for Science and Technology Journals) and Digital Engineering, and initiated the International Conference on Digital Twin (DigiTwin), which has been held in China, Australia, France, Italy, and other countries. Center members have been recognized as SME Smart Manufacturing Top 20 Most Influential Scholars and Global Highly Cited Scientists (2019–2024).
